Pastor Notes

I am writing these notes from West Palm Beach, Florida where the sun is shining and people are actually in shorts! So, in other words, before “hating” on me, let me be the one to announce — Today, we are one day closer to SPRING!

I am sure each of you know by now that our Shepherd, Friend, Diocesan Pastor, Bishop Gainer, has been transferred to the Diocese of Harrisburg, PA. Bishop Gainer will be installed as their Bishop on the Feast of St Joseph in March. Until then, Bishop Gainer now becomes our “Diocesan Administrator”. I have spoken to the Bishop several times since his naming and I have assured him of our prayers and support. Please continue to pray for him and for us, as the Holy Spirit begins to prepare a man to assume the role of our Shepherd, here in the Diocese of Lexington.

I am grateful for the people of West Palm and surrounding areas for the warm welcome to me and in support of our endeavors here at St Mark Catholic Church. It is amazing for me to see the many people who have connections in this area, who for Winter, go and “hibernate” in the sun. As I prepare for my early retirement (God Willing). I think I will be doing the same.

Also, this past weekend, I had the great honor of being the keynote speaker at the first annual Catholic Men’s Conference in the Diocese of Raleigh, NC. How wonderful it was to join with their Bishop and celebrate this great morning. It was a fantastic morning in which men traveled from all over the Diocese to spend three to four house in prayer, Confession, and then Mass with the Bishop. I thank God for allowing me to be a part of this gathering.

LET THERE BE LIGHT! Over the next week or so, you will begin to see that the lights surrounding the perimeter of the back of the Church/School property will be replaced with WORKING LIGHTS on a time sensor. I know you join me in saying: “Thank God” and “It’s about time!!!!” Special thanks to John Wright and Craig Fischer for their dedication and persistence in overseeing this job.

Evening Among Friends with Dolly Parton is soon to be a sell out! We have sold out EVERY SECTION except ORCHESTRA TWO, which is the only remaining section! Again, I do hope that you will support this endeavor as we “EVANGELIZE” to people traveling small and great distances alike, on truly what hospitality, and “LIVING” the Word of God is all about.

Finally, thank you all in advance for the goodness that I know will be shown to me during this week as I celebrate today (Sunday) my 47th Birthday. I am grateful that we have spent the past 10 years together. When I look back, I was only 37 when I began as your Pastor: I had more hair, I was thinner, no wrinkles—-HOW GOOD LIFE IS!!!! (Laughing). In all seriousness, thank you for the gifts that you provide me daily — in your love, care, support and presence.

As usual, let me remind you that I am available to you in my office, via email at or, in cases of an emergency (i.e. death or imminent need of the Sacraments), by phone at 859-623-2989, prompt 3.

See you in Church,

Fr. Jim
